What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands-on technique used by osteopathic physicians (DOs) to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses and injuries. Through the use of stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance, OMT can help relieve pain, restore motion, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

How Does OMT Work?

OMT involves the use of the physician’s hands to move your muscles and joints using techniques that include:

  • Soft Tissue Manipulation: Gentle stretching and pressure to relax muscles and improve blood flow.
  • Myofascial Release: Applying pressure to the myofascial connective tissue to relieve pain and increase mobility.
  • Articulation: Moving joints through their range of motion to improve mobility.
  • High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude (HVLA): A quick, therapeutic movement to restore motion to a joint.
  • Counterstrain: Positioning the body to alleviate muscle and joint strain.

These techniques aim to correct structural imbalances, improve circulation, and enhance the body’s overall function.

When is OMT Used?

OMT can be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sinus disorders
  • Respiratory issues
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort
  • Muscle and joint pain

Preparing for Your OMT Session

Before your OMT session, your osteopathic physician will review your medical history and discuss any current symptoms you’re experiencing. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment to allow for easy movement during the treatment.

The OMT Session

During an OMT session, you will typically lie on a treatment table. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Assessment: The physician will assess your posture, spine, and balance.
  2. Hands-On Treatment: Using a variety of techniques, the physician will manipulate your muscles and joints to relieve pain and improve function.
  3. Feedback: You may be asked to provide feedback during the session to ensure the treatment is comfortable and effective.

After the OMT Session

After the session, you might feel immediate relief or it may take a day or two for the full effects to become apparent. You may experience some mild soreness, similar to what you might feel after exercising. Drink plenty of water and rest as needed.

Benefits of OMT

OMT offers numerous benefits, such as:

  • Pain relief without medication
  • Improved mobility and function
  • Enhanced circulation and immune function
  • Reduced stress and muscle tension
  • Support for the body’s natural healing processes

Possible Side Effects

OMT is generally safe, but some patients may experience:

  • Mild soreness or discomfort
  • Fatigue
  • Temporary headache

These side effects are typically short-lived and resolve on their own.
